What is keratoconus?

Keratoconus is progressive bilateral dystrophy of the cornea. In this case, there is a thinning of the cornea and its protrusion (ectasia).

Modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of keratoconus

In the past, until the last decade of the XX century, keratoconus therapy consisted of a standard set of methods, which included consistently applied: glasses, hard contact lenses (Gas Permeable Contact Lenses - RGP) and finally - penetrating keratoplasty (PK).

Of course, attempts were actively made to find new methods of treatment, but a real breakthrough occurred in the mid-90s, when excimer laser and computed tomography of the cornea were introduced into practice, which was a revolution in the early detection of the disease.

Today, the treatment of keratoconus consists of a variety of methods, individually selected for each patient. The modern approach to treatment resembles tailoring to order, taking into account all personal characteristics.

The choice of specific methods depends on the following factors:

• Curvature of the cornea;
• Degree of astigmatism, farsightedness or myopia;
• The thickness of the cornea;
